Tec de Monterrey announced as newest member of the Science Gallery International Network

Science Gallery International announces that Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico is joining the Science Gallery Network. Tec de Monterrey will establish Science Gallery Monterrey on its city campus, as part of its new innovation building.

An official ceremony took place on 29 November 2022, marking the laying of the foundation stone of their new innovation building, in which Science Gallery will be the pivotal public engagement space.  The signing ceremony coincided with the opening of JUMPSTART, a pop-up exhibition on the Tec de Monterrey campus, introducing local young adults, researchers and academics to Science Gallery Monterrey.

This news follows just a week after a major philanthropic gift of €6.25 million (Rupees 51 Crores), was announced by Science Gallery Bengaluru. The gift was jointly pledged by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Rohini Nilekani, and Kris Gopalakrishnan, and matches the investment of the Government of Karnataka in the development of Science Gallery Bengaluru.

JUMPSTART includes works by local artists and showcases the diversity of work from the Science Gallery Network with additional pieces on loan from Science Gallery Atlanta at Emory University and Science Gallery Melbourne at University of Melbourne.

Science Gallery Monterrey will create and host free exhibitions and events designed for a target audience of young adults from 15 to 25 years old featuring participative experiences that blend art, science, and technology, and provide vital spaces for conversations on global challenges for local young people.

Speaking of the announcement, Juan Pablo Murra Lascurain, Rector of Professional and Postgraduate Studies at the Tecnológico de Monterrey said “Today we celebrate a major achievement for Tecnológico de Monterrey as it joins the Science Gallery International Network. Science Gallery Monterrey at Tec de Monterrey will be a centre for innovation in science and art. It will become a source of ideas and experiments for all researchers, locally and worldwide, interested in the crossovers between the arts and the sciences, facilitating international collaborations at the highest level. Science Gallery Monterrey will enhance the strategic vision of Tecnológico de Monterrey by continually innovating our academic programmes to respond to social, economic, labour, scientific and technological changes that will lead it to achieve leadership in innovation and entrepreneurship for human flourishing.”

Rose Hiscock, Chairperson of Science Gallery International said “Today we reach a fantastic milestone for the Science Gallery Network as we announce our newest member, Tecnológico de Monterrey. Science Gallery Monterrey brings together Tec de Monterrey’s excellent academic research activities and thriving arts and cultural scene. Monterrey is the perfect city for Science Gallery and will play a key role in expanding innovation, collaboration and connection across the Network and our commitment to the global diversity of the Science Gallery Network. We are thrilled to welcome Tecnológico de Monterrey to our Network and look forward to working together to make Science Gallery a new landmark in the academic and cultural life of Monterrey.”

Science Gallery Monterrey is the newest addition to the Science Gallery Network, joining locations in Atlanta, Bengaluru, Berlin, Dublin, London, Melbourne, and Rotterdam. To date, the Science Gallery members have collectively invested over €185m in the network. Based on the model pioneered by Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin, Science Gallery Monterrey will trigger new forms of collaboration between scientists and artists, develop innovative education programs, and enhance the excellence of research carried out by Tec de Monterrey and the other universities in the Science Gallery Network.

Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico’s leading university based in the heart of the city, is ranked as one of the top universities in Mexico. Science Gallery Monterrey at Tec de Monterrey will further the university’s commitment to leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship for human flourishing as a model for creating educational experiences to shape individuals into agents of change willing to work for the benefit of all—individuals who take responsibility for their own lives and are aware that their actions can transform others—capable, talented, upright, committed, involved visionaries with a global perspective and entrepreneurial spirit, not only at the university but in all spheres of their lives.
