Science Gallery International has the extraordinary opportunity to present an exhibition and provoke debate for the second year in a row at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland (23-26 Jan).

This is our fourth partnership with the Forum, having participated in last year’s Annual Meeting in Davos, the Annual Meeting of New Champions in Dalian, China and created a bespoke installation for the Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution in San Francisco.

Andrea Bandelli, Executive Director of Science Gallery International, is participating in the Annual Meeting once again as a Cultural Leader and as part of the World Economic Forum’s Expert Network. He will be sharing his insights on the importance of the Arts in democratising access to science and imagining more inclusive futures with leaders from business, government, international organisations, academia and civil society.

We are thrilled to be collaborating with the World Economic Forum on the exhibition PORTALS, in the Congress Centre. It features four immersive gateways that invite participants into wholly different realities and ways of experiencing the world. While we talk increasingly about technology in terms of algorithms, surveillance, and filter bubbles, PORTALS is about reclaiming technology for a meaningful human exchange. It presents an opportunity to see how much of ourselves we can really see reflected in others, reminding us of what makes us human and connecting us with each other in more meaningful ways.

More details on the artworks in PORTALS:

Awavena, a documentary that uses mixed reality to take participants deep into the Amazon and the extraordinary journey of a female indigenous leader dealing with issues that feel strikingly familiar. Directed by Lynette Wallworth and produced by Nicole Newnham, the team behind the Emmy Award-winning virtual reality experience Collisions.

New Dimensions in Testimony, an interactive conversation where participants interact with the projected image of a holocaust survivor as he answers participants’ questions about his life seemingly in real time. By the USC Shoah Foundation and Heather Maio.

Machine to Be Another, a virtual reality experience in the body of another where participants interact with a piece of another person’s life story by seeing themselves in the body of this person and listening to the thoughts inside their minds. By BeAnotherLab. (Machine to Be Another will then be heading off to Rome, where it will be on show at HUMAN+, a touring Science Gallery exhibition, in Palazzo delle Esposizioni in February.)

Shared_Portals, a live and full-body dialogue with someone in a portal in a distant place such as a refugee camp in Iraq, a university in Nairobi or a park in Colorado, exploring topics such as trust, technology and community. By Shared_Studios

Also included in the exhibition is artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s installation Pulse Index. When participants press a sensor their fingerprint will immediately appear on the largest cell of a stepped display that creates a horizon line of skin, pulsating to their heart beat.
